As a group, we all came together to give a small podcast styled discussion on our individual topics to give each other information. We were able to learn a lot about the other topics (Fashion, Music, Dance, and Film) and how orientalism is portrayed throughout each, and how it evolved or lack-there-of change throughout history.
Orientalism in Film – Lead by Christina
This discussion focuses on how Aladdin was not always a classic Disney movie but started from Middle-Eastern folk tales and a French writer with no idea about the Middle-East who exotified the story, overall. Throughout the past century of stage and cinematic productions of Aladdin, the characters and actors never fully represented the Arabian people with early actors being placed in yellow-face to the 2019 live-action remake not casting actors of middle-eastern descent.
